THURGOOD IS BACK April 7–17, 2016 on April 7, 2016 in San Francisco, CA : (San Francisco, CA) Celebrating 35 years in 2016, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (LHT) remounts its hit production of THURGOOD by George Stevens, Jr., fe aturing Steven Anthony Jones as Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) Justice Thurgood Marshall. After sold-out audiences at the Creativity Theater last July, LHT presents a limited run of eight encore performances in the Buriel Clay Theater at the African American Art & Culture Complex, 762 Fulton Street (near Webster) in San Francisco from April 7-17, 2016.
A powerful one-man play, THURGOOD was produced on Broadway in April 2008 starring Laurence Fishburne (Black-ish). In the play, set at his Howard University alma mater, a retired Justice Marshall gives a lecture reviewing his life rising from the back alleys of Baltimore to become a civil rights champion and the first African-American Justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court (1967-1991), appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
With an open seat on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) and the California U.S. Presidential Primary Elections approaching on June 7th, the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre contends that now is the time to re-inspire citizens with a modern day civic lesson through the non-threatening forum of the performing arts.
Directed by Margo Hall, LHT's Artistic Director, Steven Anthony Jones, brings Thurgood Marshall back to life in this eye-opening, humorous and personal portrait of the legendary American Civil Rights icon. With an open seat on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) and the California U.S. Presidential Primary Elections approaching in June, the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre contends that now is the time to re-educate and re-inspire citizens with a modern day civic lesson through the non-threatening forum of the performing arts.
